Description:

Over the course of two days, the student will build an Antikea Danish modern style coffee table*
worth $500.00 from start to finish. The purpose of the course is to teach the fundamentals of
furniture making from wood selection and characteristics through the Danish oil finish. The
course provides accelerated training in modern woodworking, by focusing on the thought
processes used by all experienced furniture makers through a combination of short lectures on
conceptual thinking, followed by instruction in specific techniques as the class goes through the
steps of building the coffee table. After the course the student can build finely made and finished
furniture using the transferable skills needed to move to more complex pieces with confidence.
Students will learn the concepts of self-reliance, self-teaching, and “thinking like a
woodworker.” The students will learn most of the typical techniques and tool usage of the
modern woodshop and how to apply them as desired for different applications. Tools used will
include the table saw, cutoff/miter saw, band saw, table router, horizontal belt sander and hand
sander. While not necessary for this project (because we will be using factory planed wood),
some instruction will be given on jointer and planer use and order of operations. Basic gluing
and clamping techniques will be augmented with some lessons about the “art of creative
clamping.”

Days and Hours:

The course will run from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4, 2018.
The plan is to complete the unfinished table during those hours. However, students may stay and
work until the close of the shop both days to complete unfinished steps and apply Danish Oil
finish to the final product. Students may finish incomplete tables anytime with Mr. Walkey’s
free help if needed, when he is there.
* The Antikea Danish Modern Style Coffee Table:
Below are photos of several versions of the table, which vary in wood choice, accents, length,
width, and proportions. Within limitations the students’ tables may be individualized. The basic
table we build will be made from African mahogany and wenge. African Mahogany is a lovely
wood that is easily worked, reducing cutting, joining, shaping, and sanding time and effort to a
minimum, to allow the class to focus on and learn the skills, techniques and thinking required.
Students may buy their own wood with a commensurate reduction in workshop price.

Students must register with MakerPlace two weeks in advance of the class. Fees must be paid at
the time of registration. The minimum number of students per workshop is three; the maximum
number of students is four (if an assistant has joined the course). Students will elect at the time of
registration to either build their table from African mahogany and wenge, or elect to purchase
woods of their own choosing. Students choosing to buy their own wood may consult with Mr.
Walkey about wood selection and purchase by email after registering. Mr. Walkey will supply
tape measures, squares, pencils, glue, sanding supplies, and Danish oil/ satin wax for the finish.
The cost of the workshop with wood is $500.00. The cost of the workshop without wood is
$425.00. Students are encouraged to bring notetaking materials and cameras to photograph the
processes and their project as it proceeds. Students may cancel with a full refund at any time,
provided it leaves three students for the workshop. A nominal charge of $100 will apply to last
minute cancelation of three-student classes.

Required Prerequisites:

Some woodworking or power tool experience is required unless Mr. Walkey waives this requirement for good reason. Students with significant woodshop experience can apply to take the class for free (paying only for the wood) by assisting Mr. Walkey with classes of four or five.

Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork. Our shop can be a little tricky to find so we suggest giving yourself extra time for traffic and parking.

**Please wear closed-toe shoes. No sandals**
