Have you ever wanted to cut out your own coasters, etch custom designs on glassware, or just make really awesome gifts? MakerPlace's Intro to Laser course will guide students through the care and use of the 80 and 100 watt lasers as well as the proper steps for prepping your file, material selection, and navigation of the LaserCut software. With our Hurricane Lasers, members have the ability to cut anything from acrylic to wood and achieve detailed engraving on materials like leather and anodized aluminum. The first portion of this class will be lecture based. After the lecture, students will each have the opportunity to calibrate the machine and run a test file. There will also be an opportunity for Q & A during this time. Suggested Prerequisites: The first thing you’ll need to know before taking this class is how to create a vector-based file (eg: .ai, .eps, .dxf, .dwg, .cdr .plt file extensions) If you have no idea what a vector file is or how to go about creating one we would highly suggest taking the CorelDraw: Intro to 2D Vector Graphics class first. Equipment Rundown: (2x) 100 watt CO2 Hurricane Lasers 35in x 47in in bed size (1x) 80 watt CO2 Hurricane Laser 23in x 31in in bed size File types imported into laser .plt .dxf .bmp What they can't cut: metal, vinyl, PVC, and any poly-carbonate plastics Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork.
