Have you ever wanted to design in 3D on your computer? Fusion 360 makes designing, rendering, and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) simple and fun! In this hands-on lecture/demonstration we will explore the different workspaces in Fusion 360 to design a desk lamp.

We will use the model workspace to build most of the components using sketch-based modeling. We will also explore the sculpt workspace to create the lampshade, and look at inserting pre-built components from the McMaster Carr library.

Fusion 360 is currently free for students and makers/tinkerers. Follow the instructions online to download your free Fusion 360 software. Instructions for students can be found at www.vdci.edu.

Required Prerequisites:

Basic computer skills: keyboard and mouse functions, how to save to an external drive, menu options and navigation.

Suggested Prerequisites:

In order for the class to move smoothly and allow everyone to learn the maximum amount, it’s suggested to watch the Free Fusion 360 Essentials videos that are available at www.vdci.edu or can be found at the VDCI YouTube page. This video-based workshop takes about 30 minutes, and goes over essential tools, preferences, and navigation in Fusion 360.

Syllabus (specific topics to be covered):  Sketch-based modeling, T-Spline Modeling, Joints, Materials, Inserting Components

Consumed Materials/sources:  All course materials will be provided in class and can be found for FREE at www.vdci.edu (with videos!)

Tool Requirements:  All students should bring a personal laptop to class (PC or Mac).

Software Requirements:  All students should have Fusion 360 installed before class – installation videos at www.vdci.edu
